Episode Commentary
With the performance of each successive week showing poorer and poorer participation levels in the commentary sections, I've decided to try something new.
Centralized discussion.
The links in each episode recap entitled "Discussion" link directly to the comments area of this article. You can post either from this article or through the links in any of the recaps. All the comments will end up in the same place.
From here on, this will be the spot to come to comment on all the recaps. When I recap new episodes, I'll place a link at the bottom of each epsiode's article that will lead to this spot. Feel free to join the discussion.
For the sake of clarity, if you are going to leave a comment that relates to a specific episode, please use the following format at the beginning of your comment:
S.* Ep.** -
Like so:S.1 Ep.01 - Jack was a bad choice for leader. No one would have put McCoy in charge of the Enterprise.
This way, we'll have a clearer idea of the way your comment fits into the discussion. If you have a general comment, please feel free to post it without the episode reference.
I've also included all the links to all the recaps. Each link opens in its own window, leaving this area in the background, so you can reference anything I have previously posted.
Previous comments from the first half of season 1 are collected and posted in the article below, with each set of episode comments posted in a different colour for clarity.

Once again, we have 2 characters with the same first name. There is "Brian" that Shannon was hooked up with (ha! no pun intended, but that was pretty funny!) and the "Brian" that was married to Susan, Walt's mom. There seems to be a lot of this double-naming on this show, so that leads me to think that this is some kind of virtual reality. Kind of like the Wizard of Oz, where people in Dorothy's real life were in her dream world. I am the only person I know who does not like that movie. I really hope they are going with something better than that.
And again, I think that Brian has something to do with Susan's "death," but I doubt if she is really dead. Maybe he is part of Dharma. Maybe he just wanted to get her away from her "different" son.
You now know someone else who doesn't like Wizard of Oz. I was never a fan in the first place. Damn thing scared the crap out of me when I first saw it at 4 or 5 years old. Once they started in with "Henry Gale" was a character in...yadda, yadda...on the EW board, well, now I just hate all things Judy Garland. And her little dog too...
OK, so we are the only 2 people in the world who don't think it's THE BEST MOVIE EVER MADE. I think it was the flying monkeys that did me in when I was a kid. Interestingly though, I really like chimpanzees, and once met Jane Goodall. (Amazing woman, by the way.) Obviously, monkeys and chimps are not the same thing, but ....
GB - once again, great recaps. I was too busy this weekend to watch these episodes, but watching with your recaps in mind might triggers some thoughts.
Jess - I never thought of Susan being alive. They would have had to have staged something, though, for Walt's sake. He had to believe she was dead.
Make that 3 of us on the Wizard of OZ!
OOooh...

Thanks for the recaps! I don't think I ever saw these 2 episodes. I saw season 1 in reruns and either they never ran these during the summer or I missed them. That was pre-tivo. Just wanted you to know the recaps are very much appreciated.
By the way, I never understood people's fascination with the wizard of oz. They all got on my nerves, even the dog. It's so nice to know I'm not alone.
Thanks Gerry!
Always nice to know someone's getting enjoyment out of them.
And that I'm not the only Judy Garland hater out there.
GB - Being from Ohio, I've been in hiding and considering witness relocation. May change my blog name and move my map pin somewhere, anywhere other than Ohio. But I had to jump on board to tell you great job as usual. I love the recaps. I haven't watched 15 & 16 yet, but it's on my agenda for tomorrow. There's nothing to do in Ohio anyway.
EPISODE 15
Where did Jin get that kick-ass net that he's using to catch fish? I didn't even think about it until he and Charlie were walking before Ethan hit him with that stone. There is NO WAY that net was on the plane! I'm thinking that is a GILLIGANS ISLAND moment for sure.
EPISODE 16
Did anyone else catch that Vincent was Brian's dog? When Michael went to Australia to get Walt, he told him he could bring the dog with him. Walt said, "But he's Brian's dog." Michael said he could bring him anyway. I'm going on record AGAIN as saying that Brian is a bad guy, probably part of Dharma. He manipulated Susan, Walt's mom, into leaving Michael and the United States. Then, in this episode, he puts something in Susan's drink to make her feel ill. Either she really does die or it's all a hoax to make Michael and Walt think Susan is dead. WHY didn't Brian just take Walt with him when he went to the States to tell Michael that Susan was dead???
Jess -
Totally on board with Brian being Dharma. He's a lawyer for a firm in Amsterdam...Hanso maybe?
Jess: When you mentioned the fishing net, two words jumped into my brain: cargo net. It's a method for tying down cargo to keep it from shifting. I have NO idea if anyone still uses this method.
Or perhaps Jin's father, the fisherman, taught him (when he was a boy) how to make nets from natural fibers that he or Sun found on the island.
Just guessing here....
LB, I know I posted some where about names of characters, but I can't find it now. Another one that comes to mind is "Zeke's" real name is "Tom" and that was what Ana-Lucia "named" Christian. He, in turn "named" her "Sarah," which was Jack's wife's name.
Episode 16
I was surprised that Kate had been married. Did I miss something or have the writers not gone into that yet?
Another set of great recaps. Thanks, GB.
Thanks for your hard work on the recaps!!
Enjoyable as always!!
In my effort to see the glass as half-full instead of half-empty, maybe the numbers are really bringing Hurley GOODluck. I know, it's a stretch, but....he DID survive the crash. And they could have already been in the new house when it caught on fire, perhaps being trapped. Grandpa Tito dying...I'll have to think about that one for a while.
HEYYYYYYY!!!!!!!! WAs there not an episode of Gilligan's Island were they took sea water and put it inside of coconut shells put the batteries from the radio inside the shells with the sea water and stirred them around and that's how they recharge the batteries for the radio.....Maybe Hurley should try that for his disc man ;)
ep 17
GB, what's the name of the song at the end?
Sure do miss the ultra cool Locke of season 1. Hope he comes back.
Once again, thanks for the recaps. Really enjoy reading them!
Gerry -
The song is by Damien Rice, a track called "Delicate".
SEASON 1, EPISODE 19
I know I've said it before, but I want to officially go on record as saying that I believe that Anthony Cooper, Locke's father, is the original Sawyer. Just look at the Long Con he pulled on Locke. And Kevin Tighe, the actor who plays Cooper, is just icky enough to be a con man. Oh, and don't forget about when we see Cooper, Locke, and Helen at the hotel. Is that Season Two? I TOTALLY believe that Cooper and Helen were in on another Long Con on Locke to get that money. Oh yeah, he's the original Sawyer. No doubt in my mind.
SEASON 1, EPISODE 20
Hey, why were the mini booze bottles that Kate broke made of glass instead of plastic? Remember the one in Jack's pocket in the pilot episode? It didn't break, so I assumed it was made of plastic.
SEASON 1, EPISODE 22
I had to get a little ahead of GB on the recaps because I have created a monster with loaning my DVDs to my friend Carolyn. She has blown through the first four DVDs, and is waiting for me to give her the last two. Anyway, in this Kate-centric episode, I was reminded that her childhood sweetheart's name was "Tom." That is the same name that Ana-Lucia gave to Christian when they were naming each other. Let's not forget that he named her "Sarah," which was Jack's wife's name. Icky. "Tom" is also the real name of "Zeke" of the Others. As creative as the writers are, I find it difficult to imagine that they were unable to think of more than a handful of names, and had to resort to using the same names 2 and 3 times. There has to be a reason....
I don't know Jess...
I have an ex named Jessica and two ex girlfriends with daughters named Jessica and I once hired a female singer named Jessica and I know this girl named Jess...
I don't know Jess maybe the writers and producers are trying to give us clues as to people to watch . Maybe the could be be KEY people. Just a thought.
GB - while not this is not discussion, I do have a comment. Don't despair, I'm sure I'm not the only one reading your recaps. I enjoy them every week. It could be that discussion on Season 1 has just petered out. It was hashed and rehashed. Now we're all on pins and needles waiting for Season 3 to start, but also waiting for the damn repeats of Season 2 (which comes out on DVD in a couple weeks, hint, hint). I seem to remember that there was a comment sometime back, maybe on EW, that we had missed Smokie in at lease two episodes of S2. I've been waiting for repeats to air to watch for that. So maybe others, like myself, are so anxious to reveiw S2 and get S3 started that we're not paying as much attention to the end of S1. Though, who knows what we miss by not paying attention.
I was just thinking Ep21 S1... and the last of S2 are the only times we see Sayid pacticing his Islamic/Muslim beliefs... I don't know a whole lot about it but I think it is strange they did not show more of his faith cause I know they pray like 4 or 5 times a day... and they certainly don't eat PORK (wild boar). I know the subject was hinted on when they were trying to decide on how to dispose of the bodies but that is about it. Not sure what I'm getting at but I just think it's strange that the show is not focusing more on it.....
All time favorite Hurley line"
"You got some... Arzt on you."
Sawsee here. I can't register on blogger as someone has 'my' name!! Amazing recaps GB!
I'm going to try and re-read them before S3 begins.
Here is a meaningless (??) number similarity:
666. Everyone knows that symbol. How about 6 x 6 x 6 = 216 (divided by 2) = 108.
I thought it was 'kind of' interesting. I think I will juice up my batteries with salt water (thanks prettyeyes for the suggestion) ; )
I can't wait for EW and Lost to begin! And chattin' with all of you! Cheers!
Hey, sawsee! Good to hear from you. How's the beet crop coming?
Sawsee here: Hi Lady!
The beets are getting monsterous! Thanks for asking!
Sawsee: "Hello all! In S.1 ep01, there are viewers who believe that the 'smoke monster' appears for the first time. Is it possible that the smoke monster grabbed the plane and made it crash? The button pushing may be linked to the containment of the smoke monster and was 'released' by Dez's lack of consistent button-pushing? Will we see more of Smokie in S.3, now that the buttons/hatch are destroyed? Is the smoke monster the great evil that Dharma is fighting against?
Sawsee -
If you check out my recap of s01 e01, you'll find a link that some believe proves that the "smoke monster" was active even on the beach during the first few minutes of the show...
Hey there, I'm trying to access your page for Season 1 ep 5 and 6 and it keeps coming up Bad Request. Might want to check on that.
Smoke Monster should definitely be credited above Matthew Fox. It's the real star of the show.
Btw, Wizard of Oz was my favorite movie growing up. Between 5-7 years old, I watched it at least once every two days. Of course, I used to fast forward through the black and white scenes because...who cares about Dorothy in Kansas?
Hey blah blah!
I think you'll find that most of the current discussion has moved from here to the "Purple Hatch". Feel free to post comments about the S.1 recaps here (I check it every so often) but you might want to apply for a password at the Purple hatch if you're interested in a more active chat.
There's an e-mail address on the main blog.
